Summer is coming to an end. Drivers can breathe a sigh of relief that the 100 Deadliest Days of the year are officially over. But, fall’s wet weather and shorter days brings its own fair share of problems for drivers.
Consider the three most common causes of car accidents during the fall season, and what you can do to avoid involvement in a motor vehicle accident yourself.
- Drowsy driving. With days getting shorter, your internal clock may start to affect you differently. You may find yourself staying up later or feeling more tired in the morning than usual. This feeling may get worse once Daylight Savings comes around. Drowsy driving is extremely dangerous and has been compared to driving drunk. To prevent yourself from drowsy driving, begin changing your sleep schedule gradually during the late summer so when fall and winter arrive, the change in sunlight doesn’t affect you as much.
- Distracted driving. No matter the season, distracted driving is still one of the most common causes of car accidents. Now that fall is just around the corner, the weather may be getting wetter. This makes roads slippery and dangerous for drivers. That said, keep your phone away while you’re on the road (good advice for any season) and give the cars in front of you a little extra space.
- Pedestrians. Fall is back-to-school season. It’s crucial to keep an extra-cautious eye out for kids in the morning and afternoon. Drive slowly around school areas, and keep a lookout for kids who might rush out into the road. It’s also a good idea to give yourself a little extra time in the morning to get to work, because there’ll be an increase in traffic due to school buses and parents driving their kids to school again. Give vehicles extra space, and don’t attempt any risky driving to get out of traffic.
